On Friday, 1 May, Labour Day, most commercial establishments in Barcelona will be closed due to the public holiday. This year, the holiday creates a three-day weekend, giving many citizens more free time to visit shopping centres in the Catalan capital and its metropolitan area.
Barcelona's holiday calendar impacts leisure and shopping, and shopping centres are largely affected. Many residents are asking which complexes will remain open, as commercial regulations restrict openings on designated holidays, except in specific tourist zones or with special permits.
Limited Shopping Options
Only two shopping centres will be fully open on 1 May. The Maremagnum, located in a tourist zone, is authorised to operate 365 days a year. The other is Ànec Blau in Castelldefels, where shops are permitted to open. However, at Ànec Blau, the Mercadona supermarket will be closed, consistent with its policy of not opening on holidays.
Several other shopping centres, including Viladecans The Style Outlets, Mataró Parc, Màgic Badalona, Gran Via 2, Splau, Barnasud, El Corte Inglés, Sant Cugat Centre Comercial, and Baricentro, will only have their gastronomic areas open. In Barcelona specifically, restaurants will be open at Westfield La Maquinista, Arenas Plaça Espanya, L'Illa Diagonal, Diagonal Mar, and Centre Comercial Westfield Glòries.
Full Closures
Conversely, Triangle Centre Comercial and El Corte Inglés on Diagonal will be completely closed, including all their services. This means no shopping or dining options will be available at these locations on the public holiday. Residents planning to shop or dine out on 1 May should check specific centre opening times in advance.
