Barcelona, the Diputació de Barcelona has launched the new Ageism Zero Award, a biennial prize aimed at recognising projects across Catalonia that combat ageism and support a more inclusive society for older people.
The first edition carries a total prize fund of €20,000, split equally between two categories. Local councils and other local bodies in Catalonia, third-sector social organisations, and citizens can apply.
Applications open on 1 June and close on 15 July 2026. Entries must be submitted through the Diputació de Barcelona's electronic headquarters. The award is intended for initiatives that challenge age-related stereotypes and prejudices, highlight the social value of older people, and encourage intergenerational links.
The council said the award is designed to help build a society where age is seen as a source of value and shared opportunity, not discrimination. It said tackling ageism is a strategic priority for the current mandate through the Diverse Generations, Towards Equal Opportunities project.
The new prize adds to other council work in this area, including the campaign If age doesn't limit me, why should you?, a series of talks, the first Ageism Congress, training for local professionals, and a €1.5 million fund for anti-discrimination policies.
The Diputació de Barcelona said its actions also align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, especially Goal 3, Good Health and Well-being, and Goal 10, Reduced Inequalities.
