Barcelona province has launched a new Cycle Tourism Hub, a collaborative working group designed to establish the region as a leading destination for cycling holidays. The hub was formed during meetings held on 5 May in the Vallès Oriental and Bages counties, according to the Diputació de Barcelona.
This new initiative brings together the Diputació de Barcelona, county bodies, municipalities, and private sector businesses. Its main goal is to develop the area's potential in the growing cycle tourism market.
The initial meetings saw participation from ten public institutions and 24 companies, including service providers, accommodation businesses, travel agencies, and event organisers. More members are expected to join in the coming months, and a schedule of sessions will be set to define priority actions.
Boosting Cycle Tourism
This move follows the Diputació de Barcelona's presentation of its Strategic Cycle Tourism Plan last February. The plan includes actions focused on signage, marketing, communication, restaurants, and accommodation. Officials hope to capitalise on the international exposure the region will gain from the Tour de France passing through in July, as well as opportunities from projects like the Vies Blaves Barcelona (Barcelona Blue Routes).
The Barcelona counties offer several strengths as a cycle tourism destination. These include excellent connectivity, diverse landscapes, and a wide range of routes. The aim is to promote a sustainable, year-round tourism model that links the discovery of natural and cultural heritage with cycling.
Collaborative Governance and Sustainability
The Cycle Tourism Hub is designed as a collaborative governance tool. It will act as a catalyst to increase competitiveness, promotion, and marketing efforts. Among other initiatives, the new body can also address any training needs that arise.
This action by the Diputació de Barcelona aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These include SDG 3 for “Good Health and Well-being”, SDG 8 for “Decent Work and Economic Growth”, and SDG 11 for “Sustainable Cities and Communities”. The 17 SDGs were proclaimed by the UN General Assembly on 25 September 2015, forming part of the global 2030 agenda. The Diputació de Barcelona is committed to meeting these goals and supports local governments in the province accordingly.
