Barcelona City Council is adding nine new street water play areas across the city from June to September, doubling the number of facilities available to help residents cope with summer heat.

The council said the water games will run from 10am to 8pm this year, without the midday interruptions used in 2025. First deputy mayor Laia Bonet said the aim is to give children a place to cool down, while also supporting physical activity and neighbourhood life.

The new locations are around Plaça Carme Simó, Avinguda Mistral, Plaça de Joan Pelegrí, Jardins de Justa Freire, Parc Joan Reventós, Plaça Harry Walker, Jardins dels Baix Guinardó, Parc de Antoni Santiburcio, and Plaça de Lolita Torrentó. The existing water points are already open, and the new ones will be activated progressively before the end of June.

Bonet also addressed last year’s incidents involving the water sheet in Plaça de Glòries, which is currently dry. She said ornamental fountains should not be confused with swimming pools, and that these features are not designed for play.

The measure forms part of the city’s Pla Calor, or Heat Plan. The council also plans to add five more water play spaces in 2027, including two where the Gran Via fountains are currently located, two in Ciutat Vella, one in Barceloneta, one in Sant Pere, and one in Nou Barris.
