Barcelona will host its annual Bike Festival and popular cycling event on Sunday, 31 May, starting at 10am. Barcelona City Council says the event is intended to promote cycling as an efficient and environmentally friendly way to travel.
The Bicicletada, a 12-kilometre popular ride, will begin at Carrer d'Aragó and Passeig de Sant Joan. It will pass through the Eixample, Ciutat Vella and Sant Martí districts before finishing at Passeig de Lluís Companys.
The festival at Passeig de Lluís Companys will run through the morning, with around 30 cycling-related organisations taking part. Seven cycling circuits will be set up for all ages, and a new bicycle exchange zone will let families bring a used children's bike in good condition and swap it for one that better fits their child's size or age.
This year's programme also includes the exhibition Barcelona and the Tour, a good tandem, marking the Grand Départ of the Tour de France in Barcelona. The display will include the official Tour trophy and a Tour de France jersey. For more on the city’s cycling coverage, see news.
Traffic restrictions will be in place along the route from 8:30am to 12pm, with roads reopening as cyclists pass. Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona, TMB, advises using the metro near the route, as several bus lines will be altered or limited.
In total, 41 bus lines will be affected, including lines 6, 7, 13, 19, 22, 24, 39, 46, 54, 55, 59, 63, 65, 67, 109, 115, 120, 136, 141, 150, D20, D40, D50, H12, H14, H16, V5, V7, V9, V11, V13, V15, V17, V19, V21, V23, V27, X2 and X3, plus the Red and Blue routes of the Barcelona Bus Turístic. TMB says diversions will be put in place to keep services running, and further details are available in the service notices section of its website.
