Barcelona City Council has granted initial approval for a significant urban planning modification, paving the way for the relocation of a fire station to Sarrià Avenue and the establishment of the new Entença School. The decision, made on 24 April 2026, moves forward a plan first proposed almost two years ago.

The Modificació del Pla General Metropolità (MPGM), or Metropolitan General Plan Modification, received favourable votes from the municipal government, the PSC, Barcelona en Comú, and ERC. A definitive approval is anticipated in 2027. Junts abstained, with councillor Damià Calvet criticising the slow pace, noting that a judicial ruling declared the previous fire station's installation at Joan Miró Park null 12 years ago. The PP and Vox voted against the measure, citing a lack of dialogue with residents.

Key Urban Developments

Deputy Mayor Jordi Valls highlighted the plan's positive impact on healthcare, safety, and education. The fire station is set to move to Sarrià Avenue, at the corner of Londres Street. The Entença School, which has been operating in temporary conditions at the former Model prison, will find a permanent home at Provença Street with Villarroel Street. Mayor Jaume Collboni's government also expects to progress with long-pending renovations at the Casanovas health centre (CAP).

Separately, the council also definitively approved the regulatory plan for the Muñoz Ramonet cultural centre. Located at Muntaner Street 282, this centre was once the residence of magnate Julio Muñoz Ramonet. All groups except Vox, which voted against it, supported the plan. Barcelona aims to remodel the mansion during the next municipal term.

These approvals mark a step towards resolving long-standing urban planning issues and improving public services in the city. The focus now shifts to securing final approval for the fire station and school relocation, alongside the planned renovations and cultural centre developments.
