Regional Mobility Talks Focus on Transport Upgrades

The Baix Empordà Mobility Table held a virtual session this week to advance public transport improvements in the region. Over 20 participants attended, including representatives from municipal councils, local organisations, and the Generalitat de Catalunya. Officials discussed proposals to enhance mobility and reviewed updates on ongoing transport projects. Key attendees included Joan Vicente, Director of Territorial Services for Territory, Housing and Ecological Transition in Girona; Marian Arjona, manager of Girona’s ATM (Autoritat Territorial de la Mobilitat); and Albert Carenys, head of the public transport territorial service in Girona.

Real-Time Tracking and Fare Integration Progress

Representatives shared updated data on the Clic.cat on-demand transport services around La Bisbal d'Empordà and Torroella de Montgrí. They also presented recent figures on public transport usage in the Baix Empordà and outlined which municipalities are now part of the Girona ATM consortium, granting them access to integrated ticketing. Progress on the network of ticket sales and recharge points was detailed, alongside information about technological upgrades set to roll out in the coming years. These include improvements in vehicle sustainability and the introduction of real-time data on bus locations and waiting times. The current transport service concessions are set to be extended until 2034, with these innovations planned for implementation over the coming years.

The goal is to make public transport more reliable, accessible and sustainable for all residents across the comarca.

Local Platform Pushes for Broader Mobility Solutions

During the meeting, the Prou Excuses platform presented a motion calling for improved mobility and infrastructure in the Baix Ter area. The motion, already approved by several local institutions and organisations, urges administrations to promote public transport, cycling, and car-sharing. Participants also raised specific demands to improve existing bus lines, including better shelters and signage at stops. New routes were proposed, along with the introduction of dedicated transport services for students pursuing non-compulsory education, such as Batxillerat and vocational training cycles.
