Junts has submitted a proposal to the Catalan Parliament seeking stronger action against organised theft on the 91-kilometre stretch of the AP-7 motorway through Girona province.

The measures would affect motorists using service areas, petrol stations and lorry parking areas, with tourists and older people identified by the party as particularly exposed to theft. The proposal was debated by Parliament's Interior and Public Safety Committee on Wednesday 16 September.

“The AP-7 through Girona province has become a corridor of impunity,” Junts MP Sònia Martínez told the committee.

Martínez said the Mossos d'Esquadra, Catalonia's regional police force, had identified around 100 people who allegedly operate systematically on the motorway. She cited tyre-deflation scams, thefts at petrol stations and fuel theft among the reported methods.

Proposed patrols, cameras and number-plate checks

Under the proposal, Junts calls for the Generalitat, Catalonia's government, to strengthen policing and introduce a surveillance plan at locations where drivers stop.

  • More Mossos patrols and random checks on the AP-7 through Girona province.
  • Security cameras at service areas, petrol stations and heavy-vehicle parking areas.
  • Automatic number-plate recognition and geolocation tools for Mossos officers to help identify and track suspected groups.
  • Prevention campaigns in several languages explaining the most common theft methods, aimed particularly at tourists.

The proposal also asks the Generalitat to submit a report to Parliament within three months setting out AP-7 security measures already deployed and their results. The text is set out in the Parliament's published resolution proposal.
