800 signatures collected in transport campaign
The Catalan Communist Party (Els Comuns) has gathered 800 signatures in a campaign calling for major improvements to the bus service between La Seu d’Urgell and Lleida. The initiative, launched in July 2026, seeks to address long-standing transport difficulties for residents, particularly those requiring access to healthcare and public services. A key demand is the introduction of a direct bus stop at the Hospital Universitari Arnau de Vilanova in Lleida. Currently, passengers without this stop face a journey extended by up to 45 minutes and are forced to change buses, according to campaigners. Mario Mata, Co-coordinator of Els Comuns in the Alt Pirineu and Aran region, confirmed the group has formally submitted a parliamentary proposal based on the campaign’s demands. He stated the signature drive will continue both online and through street stalls to maintain pressure ahead of the debate in the Parliament’s Territori i Habitatge commission in the coming months.
Wider demands for equitable transport
The proposal calls for multiple improvements beyond the hospital stop, including:
- Increased bus frequencies and better-aligned timetables
- Integration with on-demand bus services
- Elimination of barriers for people with reduced mobility
- A unified, integrated fare system
The campaign began at La Seu d’Urgell’s weekly market in July, where activists highlighted the daily challenges faced by commuters. The group also used the event to promote its broader proposició de llei d’equitat territorial, aimed at addressing regional inequalities in public transport access across Catalonia. The motion is expected to be discussed in the Territori i Habitatge commission at the Parlament de Catalunya in the coming months, though no specific date has been confirmed.
“This proposal gives shape to the commitment we made at the start of the campaign,” said Mario Mata. “We will keep collecting signatures to strengthen our demand.”
