The Anoia Regional Council has officially presented L'Essencial, a new Rural Commerce Network, to local councils across the region. Launched on 20 April 2026, this initiative is designed to strengthen, raise the profile of, and ensure the continuity of basic commercial services in Anoia's rural areas.
The programme emerges as a direct response to a diagnosis carried out in 2023, which highlighted the fragile and unequal situation faced by small businesses in Anoia's municipalities. According to the study, there has been a progressive loss of essential services, critical difficulties in business succession, and a lack of a coordinated strategy to address these challenges.
L'Essencial has set two main priority objectives based on this analysis. Firstly, it aims to guarantee access to commerce as a basic service in areas where it is currently non-existent. Secondly, the network will work to contribute to the viability and survival of businesses that are still active but find themselves in a vulnerable position.
Addressing Rural Business Decline
During the presentation, officials emphasised that the strategy was defined following several pilot tests conducted throughout 2024. These experiences, according to the Regional Council, confirmed the urgent need to create a stable structure for technical support and regional coordination.
In its practical operation, L'Essencial is configured as a shared workspace for the local councils of municipalities with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants. The network will offer specialised technical support to participating councils, provide accompaniment for entrepreneurial projects, and develop methodologies to facilitate business transfers.
The ultimate goal of the initiative is to generate shared tools that will facilitate the exchange of experiences and reinforce the territorial and economic cohesion of Anoia. This will be achieved through joint visibility campaigns, promoting local businesses and services across the region.
Joining the Network
Interested local councils must formalise their entry into the project by submitting a letter of adhesion. This commitment entails active collaboration in the common strategy.
The Anoia Regional Council has called on rural municipalities to join this initiative, reminding them that commerce is a key element of social cohesion. Officials stated that it guarantees the quality of life for residents and revitalises the daily life of the region's smaller towns.
