Authorities in Alt Empordà, in Girona province, are renewing their call for a dedicated police region, saying the current police structure does not fully fit the area’s security needs.
The request comes after several serious incidents, including the discovery of twelve AK-47 Kalashnikov rifles in a vehicle on the AP-7 motorway, a violent crime in Figueres, and ongoing operations against marijuana cultivation and trafficking.
Local councils, the Comarcal Council, the Catalan Parliament, and the Department of Interior have all been linked to the debate over a possible Girona Nord police region. Officials say the area’s border location, major transport routes and tourist pressure create a more complex policing environment.
The issue has been raised before, but recent events have brought it back into focus. Concerns have also been raised about judicial action after the Figueres crime, while repeated drug-related operations continue to put pressure on existing police resources.
Local leaders are expected to continue discussions with the Department of Interior about strengthening the police presence in the area. The aim is to secure a response that better matches the needs of residents and visitors in Alt Empordà.
