New Centre to Consolidate Robotics Operations

ABB Robotics will open a new 15,000 square metre technological and operations centre in Sabadell by April 2028, consolidating its presence in the Vallès region. The facility, located in the Sant Pau de Riu-sec industrial park adjacent to the C-58 motorway, will house engineering, autonomous mobile robotics (AMR), software development, and training operations for Spain and Portugal. The project, already under construction, spans a 60,000 square metre plot and is expected to take approximately 20 months to complete. It will bring together client experience, service, operations, and R&D under one roof, including laboratories, a technology showroom, training spaces, and robot assembly areas.

Relocation of 185 Workers Confirmed

All 185 employees currently based at ABB Robotics’ existing site in Sant Quirze del Vallès, just metres away but in a different municipality, will be relocated to the new Sabadell facility. The move marks a return to Sabadell for ABB Robotics, whose former headquarters now form the Fira Sabadell exhibition complex. While the robotics division relocates, other ABB services will remain at the current Sant Quirze del Vallès site for now.

Focus on AI Vision and Industrial Automation

The new centre will prioritise the development of AI-powered computer vision systems, enabling robots to interpret and respond to their environments. This technology is key to advancing autonomous and versatile robots for use in automotive, logistics, electronics, and consumer goods industries, both locally and internationally. It will also support AMR technology produced at ABB’s manufacturing plant in Burgos, linking Catalan engineering expertise with industrial production.

The robotics and physical AI sectors are entering a new era where artificial intelligence, software, and industrial experience must advance together. The Sabadell centre will allow us to combine these capabilities and deliver innovative solutions at scale to clients worldwide.

Choosing Sabadell ensures continuity of our presence in the Vallès, maintains proximity to our current teams, and strengthens our connection with Catalonia’s industrial and technological ecosystem.

Strategic Return to an Industrial Heartland

ABB was once a major economic driver in Sabadell, and its return underscores the city’s ongoing transformation into a hub for advanced manufacturing and technology. The new centre will include a command centre for robots, an auditorium, and a dedicated restaurant, reflecting its role as a strategic operational and innovation node. The facility will centralise all of ABB Robotics’ operations in Spain, including design, engineering, software, and assembly, and will serve as the strategic base for its activities in Portugal as well.
