The Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya (Meteocat) has extended a weather warning to 25 comarcas across Catalonia due to the risk of intense rainfall and violent storms on Monday, 24 August.

Heavy rain is forecast to reach over 20 millimetres within 30 minutes, prompting Meteocat to issue danger alerts across mountainous and inland regions.

High danger in Pyrenean comarcas

A high danger alert is in place for Pallars Sobirà, Pallars Jussà, La Noguera, Alt Urgell, La Cerdanya, and Alta Ribagorça in the province of Lleida. This alert runs from midday until 6pm on Monday.

Residents in these areas are advised to expect sudden downpours, lightning, and large hail. The Meteocat has warned that in some cases, hailstones could exceed five centimetres in diameter, larger than a golf ball, which can damage vehicles, crops, and infrastructure.

Moderate danger across wider region

A moderate danger alert covers additional areas in the Pyrenees, Pre-Pyrenees, Central Catalonia, Ponent, and Terres de l’Ebre. This alert begins at midday on Monday and lasts until 2am on Tuesday.

Storms are expected to be localised but may include strong winds, lightning, and sudden flooding in low-lying areas. The weather service urges caution, particularly for outdoor activities and travel.

The Meteocat has warned that, in some cases, the hail could have a diameter of more than 5 centimetres.

Local authorities and emergency services are on heightened alert. The regional civil protection agency, Protecció Civil, is monitoring the situation closely and has activated precautionary measures under its Inuncat heavy rainfall plan.

Residents are advised to stay updated through the official Meteocat warnings portal, avoid unnecessary travel during peak alert hours, and secure loose outdoor items ahead of possible storms.
