Catalonia's Civil Protection has placed the Inuncat flood emergency plan on pre-alert because intense rain is forecast for the Pyrenees, Pre-Pyrenees and inland areas of the Girona counties on Tuesday. Residents in the affected areas are being asked to take care as showers may exceed 20 litres per square metre in 30 minutes.
The warning, issued by the Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya (SMC), Catalonia's meteorological service also known as Meteocat, runs from 2pm on Tuesday until 2am on Wednesday. Showers may bring thunderstorms and, in isolated places, severe weather.
Greatest risk in mountain areas
Meteocat has set the highest expected danger level at 3 out of 6. The areas of greatest risk are in the Pyrenees and Pre-Pyrenees, while a wider belt across northern and inland Catalonia is under a lower-level warning.
- Warning period: 2pm Tuesday to 2am Wednesday.
- Rainfall threshold: more than 20 litres per square metre in 30 minutes.
- Maximum danger level: 3 out of 6.
The meteorological service said the rainfall is expected mainly from midday and will be localised within the warning areas. Civil Protection has requested caution during the showers.
Heat warning begins on Wednesday afternoon
The SMC has also updated its warnings for intense heat. That episode is forecast to begin at 2pm on Wednesday and continue until Friday.
People in the warned mountain and inland Girona areas should take particular care during the rain-warning period from Tuesday afternoon to early Wednesday.
