A 33-year-old woman was fatally stabbed in Figueres, Girona, on Tuesday, 19 May, in what officials have described as a domestic violence crime. Her 48-year-old partner, who had a restraining order against her, was arrested at the scene in Plaça de Tarradellas.
According to ElCaso.com, the man allegedly attacked the woman with a knife before attempting to wash blood from his hands at a nearby fountain, leaving her severely injured in the street. Emergency services, including Mossos d'Esquadra, Guàrdia Urbana, and the Sistema d'Emergències Mèdiques (SEM), responded to the incident, but paramedics were unable to save the victim's life.
Witnesses reportedly restrained the Spanish national until police arrived and took him into custody. The crime occurred approximately 50 metres from where the couple lived.
History of Domestic Violence
The couple had a history of domestic violence incidents, which led to a judge issuing a restraining order against the man. Despite this, he had breached the order on several occasions. ElCaso.com reported that he had been arrested three times in the previous two months for violating the order, with his most recent arrest occurring just the day before, on Monday.
The suspect also has a record of a previous homicide from several years ago, according to the same source. The victim, a foreign national, will undergo an autopsy at the forensic anatomical institute. The Mossos d'Esquadra's Criminal Investigation Division (DIC) has taken charge of the case to clarify the full circumstances.
Community Impact and Official Response
Occurring in broad daylight in a central area next to a children's park, the crime has caused significant shock among residents of Figueres, the capital of Alt Empordà. The Figueres City Council has called for a minute of silence to be held in front of the municipal building tomorrow to honour the victim and condemn the violence.
