In Cervià de les Garrigues, Lleida, eight residents were evacuated from their homes on Sunday afternoon after a wildfire broke out in forest and agricultural land.
The fire was reported at 14:47 and was being driven by a southerly wind, according to the Generalitat Firefighters. Crews were focusing on containing the right flank of the blaze and protecting buildings on the left.
Roads LP-7073 between L'Albi and Cervià, and LV-7031 between Cervià and Les Borges Blanques, were closed to traffic because of the fire. Around 40 firefighting units were mobilised, including eight aerial units, three surveillance and attack planes, four bomber helicopters, and one command helicopter. For official updates, see the Bombers de la Generalitat.
This fire in Les Garrigues came after another blaze in Sanaüja, Segarra, which was brought under control earlier on Sunday morning. Rural Agents said the fire risk was very high on Sunday in 30 municipalities across central and western Catalonia.
Those municipalities are in the Alt Urgell, Anoia, Noguera, Ribera d'Ebre, Segarra, Segrià, Solsonès, and Terra Alta regions. The Plan Alfa wildfire prevention and response plan was activated at Level 3 in these areas, with extreme caution urged for outdoor activity. For more on local coverage, see our news page.
