Vilanova i la Geltrú City Council has launched a public call for applications to operate 10 market stalls across its municipal markets, with interested parties able to submit proposals until 27 April. This initiative aims to reinforce local commerce and support quality, proximity-based businesses in the town.
The tender includes three stalls at the Centre Market (Mercat del Centre) and seven at the Sea Market (Mercat de Mar), one of which is designated for a bar-restaurant. Successful applicants will be granted administrative concessions for a period of 25 years, awarded through a public competition based on automatic scoring criteria. Furthermore, new concession holders will benefit from bonuses on the monthly cost of the stall for the first two years of operation.
Prioritising Innovation and Local Produce
The valuation system for applications prioritises commercial differentiation and innovation, with particular interest in activities not currently present in the respective market. Projects linked to local, sustainable, artisan, or specialised products will also be viewed favourably.
However, certain activities are not permitted in specific markets. At the Centre Market, fish and seafood, butchery, cured meats, charcuterie and cheesemonger, poultry and eggs, legumes, fruit and vegetables, bakeries, frozen foods, herbalists, prepared food, bar-restaurants, and florists are not allowed. At the Sea Market, butchery, cured meats, fruit and vegetables, and poultry and eggs are among the disallowed activities.
Eva Bolaño, the Councillor for Markets and Consumption, stated that "this call aims to reinforce the role of municipal markets as spaces for local and quality commerce, supporting initiatives that champion local and 'kilometre zero' products." Councillor Bolaño added that "markets are a key element in promoting a more sustainable consumption model rooted in the territory."
Prospective applicants must first verify that their proposed activity is permitted in their chosen market. Comprehensive information regarding the call, available stalls, and tender conditions can be found on the municipal website.
