Teachers in the Valencian Country have rejected the Ministry of Education’s latest offer and will continue their indefinite strike. The vote, held yesterday morning, saw 91% of 30,014 educators oppose the proposal, while 80% backed continuing the strike. Of those, 54% wanted targeted actions and mobilisations, and 26% wanted to keep the strike in its current form.
The only part of the offer that won support was the plan to cut bureaucracy. With 69% in favour, teachers accepted a commitment to approve an administrative simplification decree within six months, with measures aimed at reducing paperwork in schools.
Class sizes were one of the main points of disagreement. A total of 94% rejected the proposed gradual reduction in student-teacher ratios across all stages, from infant education to baccalaureate. The government had proposed reaching 22 students per group in infant and primary education, 25 in ESO, and 30 in baccalaureate by the 2031-2032 academic year, with implementation due to begin between 2027-2028 and 2031-2032.
Staffing levels also remained a major issue, with 89% voting against the Ministry’s proposal. The offer included talks with a priority to recover hours for semi-presential cycles. On school buildings and facilities, 78% rejected the plan, which included a Master Plan for Educational Infrastructure, a thermal comfort plan, an accessibility plan, and a new €10 million subsidy programme for municipal councils to improve local educational centres.
Inclusive education and language policy were also part of the dispute. On inclusive education, 84% said the proposal was not enough. The Ministry had proposed a 30% rise in social education professionals in the 2026-2027 academic year, 135 new Hearing and Language teacher posts, and at least 36 new UECO classrooms in 2026-2027. On language, the offer included training linked to Valencian language qualifications and a pay supplement rising by €75 a month in September 2026, another €75 in January 2027, and €50 in January 2028. Even so, 85% voted against it.
Vocational Training was another area of rejection, with 83% opposing the proposal. The Ministry said it would keep training cycles previously funded by European resources using its own funds, and that the 2026-2027 offer would be at least equal to this year’s, based on objective criteria. Union representatives are due to meet the Ministry again tomorrow, Sunday at 18:00, to continue talks. More Catalonia-wide news
