Two people died in a traffic accident on the N-240 road near Montblanc, Tarragona, on Friday night. The victims were the sole occupants and drivers of two cars involved in a head-on collision.

The accident happened around 10pm at kilometre 36.700, close to the N-240 exit for the AP-2 motorway. Emergency services closed the road in both directions to deal with the incident, according to the Diari de Tarragona.

Both drivers died at the scene. One was a 50-year-old Italian national living in El Pont d'Armentera. The other was a 27-year-old man, identified as J.A.C.A., from L'Espluga de Francolí.

Emergency Response and Road Closures

Four fire brigade units, three Mossos d'Esquadra patrols, and three SEM medical units attended the scene. Firefighters worked to free the victims and stabilise one of the vehicles.

The N-240 remained closed until 1.15am on Saturday, with diversions put in place. On Saturday morning, Mossos d'Esquadra officers returned to the site to gather further evidence for their report, requiring another temporary closure of the road section for police investigation work.

History of Accidents on N-240

This section of the N-240 has seen other fatal accidents, although it is not officially designated a 'black spot' for collisions. On 13 December 2014, a lorry hit a car at kilometre 37, killing the car's driver. Another fatal accident occurred on 5 November 2000, when a car collided with two others at kilometre 36, resulting in the death of its female driver.

Rising Fatalities in Tarragona

These two deaths bring the total number of fatalities on Catalonia's interurban roads this year to 38. Of these, 13 have occurred in the Tarragona region, representing over a third of the total across Catalonia. This marks the first fatal accident in Tarragona this May. The previous one was a pedestrian hit-and-run on 29 April in La Pobla de Mafumet.
