Tarragona drivers, commuters and businesses should expect major disruption from Friday 4 July to Sunday 6 July, when the first three Tour de France 2026 stages pass through Catalonia.
Official plans say road closures in Tarragona province, including the N-340 and A-7, can last up to five hours. That means longer journeys, temporary access restrictions and traffic checks for anyone travelling near the route.
What the official plans say
According to the official Tour de France route information from letour.fr and the Catalan security plan from the Generalitat de Catalunya, the opening stages will pass through Barcelona, Tarragona and Granollers, affecting 60 municipalities across Catalonia. The Mossos d'Esquadra say 4,500 officers will be deployed for the operation.
The route is part of the Tour de France 2026 Grand Départ in Barcelona. For local people, the main impact will be timed closures, diversions and controlled access before and after the race passes, especially on roads linked to the N-340 and A-7.
Who in Tarragona will feel it most
Residents making local trips, commuters heading to work, parents planning school or childcare journeys, and businesses waiting on deliveries are likely to be affected. Emergency and security operations usually require the route to be clear before the peloton arrives, so closures can begin well before riders pass.
People planning to travel on 4, 5 or 6 July should allow extra time, avoid non-essential car journeys near the route, and check whether deliveries, appointments or customer access need to be rescheduled. Follow police instructions and temporary local signage on the day, especially if you live near the N-340, the A-7 or other connecting roads.
