Tarragona province is facing a high risk of major wildfires, with ten areas identified by the Catalan government as Priority Protection Perimeters, or PPPs.

These zones are defined as places with a high risk of forest fires and continuous forest mass, where large fires can spread more easily. In Tarragona, the classification covers much of the province, while Tarragona city and much of the Costa Daurada, from Salou to Cunit, are largely outside it.

The designation is intended to help target prevention and mitigation work in the most vulnerable areas. That can include controlled burns, forest thinning and better access for firefighting crews.

The Catalan government says the aim is to reduce the chance of large-scale incidents that could affect natural spaces and nearby communities. For readers following local updates across the region, see our news coverage.
