Girona has received initial approval from the Spanish Ministry for Ecological Transition for two large battery storage plants, Glauco Almacena and La Farga BESS, planned between Vilademuls and Sant Julià de Ramis.

According to the Ministry, the two projects would provide 203.778 MW of installed power and 518.324 MWh of useful capacity. The approval is an early step, but it moves both schemes further along the process.

Battery storage is used to hold electricity when supply is high and release it later when demand rises or renewable output falls. In Catalonia, that can help support the grid as more solar and wind power comes online.

The projects are part of wider energy infrastructure growth in the Girona area. For readers following local energy and planning news, see our news coverage.

Officials have not announced a construction timetable or an operational start date for either facility. The Ministry's approval indicates that the projects have met the required environmental and technical criteria to continue through the process.
