Arrests made during summer crime prevention push
The Mossos d'Esquadra, Catalonia's regional police, have arrested six men aged between 29 and 42 in connection with break-in robberies at private homes in Barcelona. The arrests followed two separate police operations in the districts of Horta-Guinardó and Sarrià-Sant Gervasi on 30 and 31 July. The interventions are part of heightened summer patrols aimed at preventing property crimes, which often increase when residents leave their homes vacant during holiday periods.
Robbery in progress foiled in Sarrià-Sant Gervasi
On the evening of 30 July, officers responded to reports of a burglary in progress at a residence in Sarrià-Sant Gervasi. Upon arrival, they observed four men leaving the area carrying bags filled with valuables. The suspects attempted to flee but were apprehended after a coordinated search involving uniformed and plainclothes units. Police recovered stolen items from the home and tools believed to have been used in the forced entry. The property showed signs of damage at entry points and evidence that the building’s alarm system had been tampered with.
Suspects caught scouting homes in Horta-Guinardó
The following day, 31 July, undercover agents patrolling Horta-Guinardó identified two men acting suspiciously outside apartment buildings. The pair were seen ringing doorbells to check for occupancy and attempting to force open a lock. After identifying the individuals, officers conducted a search and found equipment commonly associated with burglary, including protective gloves, masks, sunglasses, large screwdrivers and cash in various currencies.

A significant number of those detained had no prior criminal record linked to residential theft. Authorities are investigating the possibility that the suspects formed part of an itinerant criminal group operating temporarily in Barcelona.
Residents urged to take precautions when away
In light of the arrests, the Mossos have renewed safety advice for residents planning to leave their homes unoccupied. They recommend ensuring all doors, windows and access points are securely locked before departure. They also advise against posting holiday absences on social media, arranging for a trusted person to collect mail and periodically checking that security alarms remain operational. Additionally, the force has warned the public to report any unusual markings near building entrances, potential signals used by burglars to identify vacant flats.
