Emergency services in Roses, Girona, have been searching since Wednesday evening for a 16-year-old boy who went missing during a jet ski excursion off the coast. The teenager was part of a group about 900 metres offshore when he disappeared.
The excursion included three other young people and an instructor. It took place on Wednesday afternoon, and the group was returning to Santa Margarida because of a problem when they realised the boy was not with them. His family alerted emergency services after he did not arrive at the expected time, around 8.30pm.
Salvament Marítim, Spain’s maritime rescue agency, began the search in the Almadrava and Canyelles areas, near the Castell de la Trinitat, where the group had been and where the boy was last seen. By Thursday morning, units from the Bombers, Mossos d’Esquadra, Guardia Civil, Roses Local Police and the Red Cross had joined the operation. More local news
The Guardia Civil is leading the search and investigation, under the supervision of Figueres Court of First Instance number 4. The force has deployed resources by sea and land, and planned to add aerial units during Thursday morning. The search covers the coast by land, sea and air.
Salvament Marítim’s helicopter and several Salvamar vessels are involved, along with the Bombers’ drone unit and underwater team. The last confirmed sighting of the teenager was near the Castell de la Trinitat in Roses. For official maritime rescue information, see Salvamento Marítimo and for Catalan police updates, see Mossos d’Esquadra.
The search follows another emergency operation in Cap de Creus that ended successfully just hours earlier. A 24-year-old diver who had gone missing on Wednesday morning after being swept away by a current was found alive around 7.30pm.
