The Futbol Sala Sant Cugat women's team lost 2-3 to Espanyol on Sunday in Sant Cugat del Vallès. A late goal from the visiting side broke a tie, securing the win for Espanyol in the 24th matchday of the Honour Division.
This defeat leaves the Sant Cugat team ninth in the league table, just one point above the non-compensated relegation zone. Their next opponent will be CET 10, currently sitting in third position.
The match did not start well for the home side. Espanyol took the initiative early, creating the clearest chances. However, Sant Cugat's strong defence and effective goalkeeping kept the score level until the 10th minute.
First Half Action
Sant Cugat scored with their first real opportunity when Maria Baena found the net. Just a minute later, Claudia Navia doubled their advantage, making it 2-0. Sant Cugat's direct play and efficiency put Espanyol under pressure, but the visitors recovered quickly. Carlota Martínez and Adriana de Regas scored in the final minutes of the first half, levelling the score at 2-2.
Second Half Drama
The second half began at a slower pace, with both teams trying to control possession. Clear scoring opportunities were scarce until the closing stages of the game. With less than five minutes remaining, both teams created their best chances of the half. Espanyol hit the post twice, and Sant Cugat struck the crossbar, suggesting the match would end in a draw.
However, with only 20 seconds left on the clock, Adriana de Regas scored again for Espanyol, converting a well-placed assist to make it 2-3 and seal the victory. Futbol Sala Sant Cugat coach Albert Tejero stated that the team must continue fighting. He told reporters, "We have to keep going, get the three points next week and continue fighting to get out of the relegation zone."
