Salou has held its first Sustainable Tourism Prizes, recognising student ideas for more responsible tourism in the Tarragona town. The ceremony took place on 29 May 2026 in the Costa Daurada Room at Salou Town Hall.
The Municipal Tourism Board organised the awards with sponsorship from local tourism businesses and the participation of several educational centres. The competition received 18 entries from ESO, Baccalaureate and vocational training students at Jaume I Institute and Elisabeth School.
Judges, including institutional representatives and technical staff from the Town Hall, assessed the entries on creativity, suitability, links to sustainability and the inclusion of inclusive elements. The criteria were aligned with Salou's wider tourism strategy.
The winners were Angeli Kumari and Mara Muñoz from Jaume I Institute, Lucía Marin from Jaume I Institute, Martina Martinez and Erika Hellin from Elisabeth School, Teo Martell from Jaume I Institute, and Laia Virumbrales and Maria Espada from Elisabeth School. Their prizes were linked to local sponsors, including Camping La Siesta, Blasi Group-Camping Sangulí, Rentalmar-Olympus Palace, Blaumar Group and Experiences in Salou.
Pere Granados, Salou's mayor and president of the Municipal Tourism Board, said tourism is the town's economic engine and that sustainability in the sector needs to be strengthened. He thanked the young participants and said they had understood what sustainability means in the municipality.
The Town Hall and the Tourism Board say the prizes are intended to involve young people more closely in promotion policies and as local ambassadors for Salou. The programme is expected to continue, with the aim of encouraging more students to contribute ideas for the town's sustainable future. For more local news, see News.
