In Girona, an 18-year-old French national died in a collision on the AP-7 motorway in Llers, early on Tuesday morning. Emergency services received the alert at 5.24am, at kilometre 20.4 of the road.
According to the initial report, a car carrying five occupants collided with the rear of a lorry for reasons that are still under investigation. One of the car's occupants, identified as B.V., died from the impact.
The other four occupants of the car suffered less serious injuries and were taken to Josep Trueta Hospital in Girona for treatment.
Several Mossos d'Esquadra patrols were activated after the crash. Four units from the Generalitat Fire Brigade attended the scene and carried out extrication work, while five units from the Medical Emergency System, SEM, were also dispatched.
The fatality brings the provisional number of deaths on Catalan roads this year to 58, according to the Catalan Traffic Service, Servei Català de Trànsit. More Catalonia news
