Iberdrola has launched its first solar community in Salou, Tarragona, a pioneering shared self-consumption project that will provide local renewable energy to more than 300 residents. This initiative, started on 13 May 2026, requires no construction work or initial investment from the families involved.
The photovoltaic installation is located on the roof of the Playamero owners' community and has an installed capacity of over 200 kWp. The energy generated is 100% sustainable and can be used by subscribers within a five-kilometre radius.
This project marks a new step in the expansion of shared energy communities. This model helps families access renewable energy even if they do not own a roof or cannot install solar panels on their homes. Iberdrola covers the full investment, as well as the management and technical maintenance of the infrastructure.
Boosting Sustainable Energy Access
The company states that this approach helps move towards a more efficient, sustainable, and accessible energy model. It also aims to reduce users' electricity bills and promote local, zero-kilometre energy consumption. Juan Miguel Bailón, Iberdrola's commercial delegate in Catalonia, said this initiative "reflects the company's commitment to local, sustainable, and new actions that supply local energy to customers."
Salou's mayor, Pere Granados, expressed satisfaction with the project's launch. He highlighted that it "will generate renewable energy and make it available to citizens, moving towards a more sustainable, efficient city committed to the energy transition." Granados also stressed the importance of continuing to promote initiatives linked to sustainability and improving residents' quality of life, aligning with the municipality's green transformation model.
Community Involvement Key to Success
A key factor in the project's realisation was the involvement of property administrator Àlex Savé. He encouraged the Playamero Owners' Community to offer a previously unused space to become an infrastructure serving the common good. His mediation and sensitivity towards sustainability and energy transition were critical in making this pioneering initiative in Tarragona province a reality. It benefits hundreds of families and promotes a more responsible and environmentally friendly energy model.
Iberdrola continues to strengthen its commitment to self-consumption and new energy efficiency methods. The company is also improving compensation for surplus energy from customers with their own installations.
