Spain's railway infrastructure manager, ADIF, plans to restore freight train circulation through the Rubí tunnel, located between Castellbisbal and Rubí-Can Vallhonrat in Catalonia, from the night of 28 April. Services will initially operate on a single track. This reopening marks the completion of the first phase of reinforcement, stabilisation, and improvement works on the tunnel's infrastructure, which have lasted seven weeks. The single-track operation will be in effect for at least one month, until the full works are completed and double-track circulation can be restored. Freight trains will use the single track for twelve hours daily, from Wednesday to Sunday, and for twenty-one hours on Mondays and Tuesdays. This point is important for the rail transport of goods heading north. ## Impact on Freight Services During the seven-week closure, ADIF, in coordination with the Catalan government, implemented alternative routes for freight. These included trains entering the Port of Barcelona from the south via Lleida, a journey that added seven hours to transit times. Another option involved goods reaching the La Llagosta terminal and completing the remainder of the journey by lorry. Freight trains originating from the north, specifically from Portbou, were most affected, including both Iberian gauge and standard gauge services. ADIF communicated its decision to the Catalan government, which oversees the Rodalia commuter rail service, as well as to freight operators and other relevant institutions. In a statement, ADIF explained that these circulation plans "address the need to prioritise the reopening of circulation for freight services, given their significance for economic activity in the region." The current single-track arrangement is a temporary measure, with ADIF aiming to fully restore double-track operations once the comprehensive improvement works are finalised. This will further enhance the efficiency and capacity of rail freight transport through this important corridor.
