Roses, Girona, has fitted air conditioning at El Franquet nursery school to improve comfort for children aged 0 to 3 and staff during the summer months. The work also includes a new air renewal system, in line with the Thermal Installations Regulation for buildings.
The new system uses split units in shared spaces such as the dining room, dormitories and multi-purpose room. Portable penguin-type units will cool individual classrooms, according to the City Council. The aim is to help protect young children, who are especially vulnerable to high temperatures.
The centre will also host a summer camp, so the upgrade is intended to support activities in more suitable indoor conditions. Roses City Council said the work is part of its response to rising temperatures in educational settings.
Lluís Mas Blanch Ponce, the councillor for education, said the council recognises the problems caused by high temperatures in schools and linked the issue to climate change. He said the Education and Health department is working with the Public Infrastructure and Services Area on both immediate and structural measures.
The council also plans a study of the needs and features of other educational centres. That review will look at electrical installation capacity, energy use, indoor air quality, ventilation and building features, to guide future action. The municipal government said it also wants to improve insulation, enclosures, windows, glazing and solar protection systems. More Catalonia news
