Reus has inaugurated its first statue showing Antoni Gaudí as an adult, with the monument placed at the foot of the Prioral de Sant Pere. Hundreds of people attended the unveiling on Tuesday in the Baix Camp capital.
The initiative was led by the Amics de Gaudí de Reus, and it gives the city a new way to honour its most famous son. The timing is also symbolic, coming close to the centenary of the architect's death, which will be marked in 2026.
The sculpture shows Gaudí working on a model for his proposed project for Reus, the façade of the Santuari de Misericòrdia. That design was never built, but it remains an important part of his legacy and his link to the city, according to Diari de Tarragona.
Reus has long promoted Gaudí as one of its main cultural and tourist draws, and the new statue adds to that effort. It also strengthens the city's public spaces dedicated to recognising the architect's work and connection to his birthplace.
