In the Catalan Pyrenees, 60 horses have started their seasonal transhumance, travelling along the C-13 through Montardit, Sort and Rialp before heading to Montenartró and joining the N-260.
The horses belong to Lázaro Moreno of Tornafort. He said they are expected to reach Sant Joan de l’Erm in Alt Urgell in a few weeks, where they will stay for the summer before returning in October.
Moreno said he and other shepherds manage the impact of the move on road traffic, and that the routes used are traditional animal trails. This movement is part of the twice-yearly transhumance in the Sobirà area of the Catalan Pyrenees.
Elsewhere in the region, farmers in Alta Ribagorça have also begun transhumance with cows and sheep. Their herds are moving towards the Saraís mountain in Durro and the Cardet mountain, where they will graze during the summer.
