Barcelona’s Primavera Sound festival drew several high-profile guests, even with Thursday night rain. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Catalan President Salvador Illa attended the British band Gorillaz’s concert on Saturday, the same night American singer Olivia Rodrigo gave a surprise performance.
After official engagements in Madrid with Pope Leo XIV, Sánchez travelled to Barcelona for the festival. He was accompanied by his wife, Begoña Gómez, and by Illa. At the event, they watched Gorillaz and met other artists including Amaia, Juanjo Bona and Martín.
Former Barça coach Pep Guardiola also attended Primavera Sound on Friday with his daughter. He met FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta, and images of them with other attendees circulated on social media. The main concert that night was by The Cure, who returned to Barcelona’s Parc del Fòrum 14 years after their last performance there.
Olivia Rodrigo announced her surprise show on Instagram on Saturday afternoon. Her set mixed hits with 90s-style guitar rock, and Robert Smith, The Cure’s singer, joined her on stage to sing What’s Wrong With Me. The performance came just before the release of her new album, You seem pretty sad for a girl so in love.
Rodrigo will return to Barcelona next year for her The unraveled tour, with dates on 1, 2, 5 and 6 May at Palau Sant Jordi. She previously presented her second album, Guts, in Barcelona in 2024 to more than 18,000 people.
