In Madrid, Pope Leo XIV completed his first papamobile tour on Saturday lunchtime, with an estimated 130,000 people lining the streets, according to the Spanish government delegation.
The open-top Mercedes passed after an event at the Royal Palace. Organisers had planned a shorter route, but it was extended because of the size of the crowd.
People waved Spanish and Vatican flags and chanted in support of the pontiff. Leo XIV travelled by papamobile as far as the doors of the Audiencia Nacional.
He then got out of the vehicle and continued in a black car, still waving to the crowds from the window. The change gave him more time to greet people gathered in the city centre.
The visit fits a long pattern of papal trips drawing large crowds in Spain, a country with deep Catholic roots. Further details of the pope’s schedule were not immediately released. For more Catalonia-wide coverage, see our news page and our latest updates.
