Pope Leo XIV is scheduled to make an apostolic journey to Spain from 6 to 12 June, with a significant portion of his agenda focused on Barcelona, according to the official programme published by the Vatican. The visit combines religious ceremonies, social engagements, and institutional stops across Catalonia.
After leaving Madrid, the pontiff will arrive in Barcelona on Tuesday, 9 June. His itinerary includes prayers at Barcelona Cathedral, followed by an evening prayer vigil at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys in Montjuïc.
Social and Pastoral Engagements
The most socially and pastorally oriented part of the visit will take place on Wednesday, 10 June. Pope Leo XIV will visit the Brians 1 penitentiary centre, which houses both men and women and has included a mixed module since 2018. This marks the second time the pontiff has visited a prison during his papacy, following a previous visit to Bata in Equatorial Guinea.
Following the prison visit, the Pope will travel to the Monastery of Montserrat. There, he will pray the rosary and share lunch with the community of Benedictine monks.
Raval and Sagrada Família
The Pope's itinerary also includes a visit to the parish of Sant Agustí in Barcelona's Raval neighbourhood. He will meet with the Augustinian community, to which he belongs, and with representatives from diocesan charity and assistance organisations.
In the afternoon, Pope Leo XIV will celebrate mass at 19:00 at the Sagrada Família. Afterwards, he will bless the recently completed Jesus Christ tower, which stands at 172.5 metres and is the tallest part of the temple. This blessing coincides with the centenary of Antoni Gaudí's death. The pontiff will then continue his journey to Gran Canaria the following day.
