The Plemcat offshore wind test platform, a project of the Catalan government in the Gulf of Roses, is nearing final approval. The Ministry for Ecological Transition is expected to publish its Environmental Impact Statement (DIA) soon, a critical step before the project can proceed, according to the ACN news agency.
The ministry opened the project for public information almost two years ago, in late May 2024. Plemcat is designed as a testing ground and a precursor for installing commercial wind farms in Leba 1, the only area in Catalonia designated for such infrastructure under the Maritime Spatial Planning (POEM) framework.
Project Opposition and Legal Challenges
Opponents of the project have warned of its "dangers" and stated they will challenge the approval in court if it receives the green light. The platform's development has faced scrutiny regarding its potential environmental effects and impact on local communities.
The Plemcat initiative aims to position Catalonia at the forefront of marine renewable energy research and development.
