Barcelona was the focus on Saturday as Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez made a surprise visit to Primavera Sound, attending concerts alongside Catalan President Salvador Illa.
In a video posted on Instagram, Sánchez said the festival is more than music. He described it as a showcase of “talent, creativity, and a way to show the world an open, diverse, and energetic Barcelona and Spain.”
Sánchez travelled to Barcelona with his wife, Begoña Gómez, after receiving Pope Leo XIV in Madrid earlier that same day. At the festival, they saw acts including Gorillaz, My Bloody Valentine, The XX, and a surprise performance by Olivia Rodrigo.
The Prime Minister said Primavera Sound’s international success “speaks of a plural society that understands culture as a space for encounter, coexistence, and freedom.” He also thanked the festival for its commitment to peace, solidarity, and the defence of culture.
Illa also shared photos on Instagram with Sánchez at the festival. He described Primavera Sound as a place of “talent, creativity, and international projection for an open, diverse, and vibrant city.” For more Catalonia coverage, see our news page.
