Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on 13 June 2026 that an interim agreement between Iran and the United States could be finalised within the next 24 hours. The announcement places Pakistan at the centre of a fast-moving diplomatic process with implications for the wider region, including Catalonia’s international business and security outlook. Sharif said the deal was expected to be signed electronically and would begin a 60-day period for further negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme and control of the Strait of Hormuz, among other issues. He shared the update on social media and said Pakistan was preparing for the electronic signing immediately after finalisation, followed by technical-level talks next week.
The prime minister thanked both the United States and Iran for their commitment to the negotiations. He also referred to the supportive role played by what he called “brotherly” countries in the region.
Sharif said the agreement would lay a foundation for lasting peace. His message named US President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, negotiator Steve Witkoff, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
Trump had announced on Thursday that he was suspending planned attacks against Iran. He said the decision followed “highest-level talks” with Iranian officials and agreement on the “final points” of a deal to end the war, which began with the Israel and US offensive against Iran over three months ago.
Iran said an announcement would be made “as soon as” the “competent” authorities reached a definitive conclusion on the negotiations. Talks remain open, mediated by Pakistan, following a ceasefire agreed on 8 April, which has also seen recent exchanges of attacks. Some negotiating sources had initially suggested the memorandum would be signed in Geneva, Switzerland, but the date could be postponed until the Group of Seven leaders’ summit, scheduled for 15 to 17 June in Evian, in the French Alps.
