Eighty chefs showcased their cooking skills in Barcelona's Rambla de Santa Mònica for the fourth annual paella competition. This amateur cooking contest aimed to raise awareness about multiple sclerosis and collect funds to improve the quality of life for people living with the illness.
The initiative, organised by the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation and the Friends of La Rambla association, sought to raise €16,000. These funds are designated for research into the autoimmune disease, which affects approximately 12,000 people in Catalonia, according to organisers. The money will also support neurorehabilitation services for patients and promote scientific research to halt the progression of the disease, which currently has no cure.
Chefs Cook for a Cause
Participants included both new and experienced chefs. Some were making their debut at the Rambla paella competition after appearing on a popular cooking programme, while others, like the Butchers' Guild, have competed in all four editions. The event also drew chefs deeply connected to the cause, including one participant who has multiple sclerosis.
After a morning of cooking, attendees tasted 40 different types of paella. The varieties ranged from 'botifarra de perol' (pork sausage) paella and 'rostes amb espàrrecs i alls tendres' (bacon with asparagus and spring garlic) to cod with mushrooms. Naturally, Valencian paella was also among the offerings.
