Barcelona’s Montjuïc residents are facing traffic restrictions and access controls on Tuesday, 9 June, when Pope Leo XIV is due to attend an evening prayer vigil at the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium.

People living in areas such as El Polvorí and La Font de la Guatlla said they were still unclear about how the measures will work. On Saturday morning in Plaça de Llorca, Marina de Port, neighbours gave different views, with some thinking only bus routes would change and others saying car access would require special accreditation.

The restrictions are due to start at 12pm on 9 June. A controlled zone will be set up around the Olympic Stadium, with access limited to people with accreditation. Traffic will also be cut off on Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina, Carrer de Lleida, Plaça de Carlos Ibáñez and Carrer del Foc, and residents may need to show proof of their address at checkpoints.

Parking on the mountain will also be affected, so private vehicles will not be able to enter the restricted zone. Local bus services may be diverted, while shuttle buses will run on Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina to help people move around the area.

Barcelona City Council said accreditations issued to residents when FC Barcelona played at Montjuïc will also be valid for this visit. The council added that residents do not need those accreditations if they can show their DNI, the Spanish national identity document, when asked by security staff.
