Mollet del Vallès, a town in the Barcelona province, received its municipal strategic plan for green infrastructure and biodiversity on 6 May 2026. The document, delivered by the Diputació de Barcelona to the Mollet del Vallès City Council, analyses and proposes a municipal strategy for green infrastructure, according to officials.

The plan is based on implementing the 3-30-300 model, an urban health indicator. This model suggests that residents should be able to see at least three mature trees from their homes, live in a neighbourhood with 30% tree cover, and have access to a green space larger than half a hectare within 300 metres.

A diagnosis conducted for the plan found that the first indicator, seeing three mature trees from home, is not met in the Centre, Estació de França, Estació del Nord, and Col·legis Nous neighbourhoods. Tree cover, the second indicator, is met in most areas, with exceptions in Centre and Col·legis Nous. Access to a nearby green space, the third indicator, is largely fulfilled across the town, with a minor gap between the Centre and Riera Seca areas.

Connecting Green Spaces

The proposed green infrastructure focuses on landscape ecology, emphasising connectivity between parks and green corridors. This approach respects existing planning documents. The plan also identifies various reproducible actions for all neighbourhoods to help achieve the 3-30-300 objective.

This support from the Diputació de Barcelona aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Specifically, it addresses SDG 3 ('Good Health and Well-being'), SDG 11 ('Sustainable Cities and Communities'), and SDG 13 ('Climate Action'). The 17 SDGs were proclaimed by the UN General Assembly on 25 September 2015, forming part of the global agenda for 2030.

Future Environmental Goals

The Diputació de Barcelona is committed to these goals and supports local governments in the province in line with the SDGs. The strategic plan for Mollet del Vallès represents a step towards improving urban environmental quality and residents' well-being, with future actions expected to focus on implementing the identified strategies and monitoring progress against the 3-30-300 model.
