Mollet del Vallès council has submitted objections to the Generalitat’s proposal to remove the town from its list of zones de mercat residencial tensionat, designated pressured housing market areas. If Mollet is removed, tenants signing or renewing affected rental contracts would lose the legal limits on rent increases and other housing-access support mechanisms linked to that status, the council said.
The town was included in the first designation of pressured housing market areas in 2024. The Generalitat uses the designation in municipalities where access to housing is particularly difficult, allowing statutory controls on rental prices.
Town hall argues renters still need protection
The objections challenge Mollet’s proposed removal during the Generalitat’s review of the map, launched at the end of July. Across Catalonia, the review retains the regulation in 118 municipalities, adds 53 and proposes removing it from 22, including Mollet.
Marina Escribano Maspons, Mollet’s councillor for housing, said the municipality did not yet meet the conditions to leave the protected category.
“Leaving the list of municipalities with a pressured residential market would mean a loss of protection for people who rent their homes, and a general increase in housing costs that we cannot afford in any way,” she said.

Residents can consult the Generalitat’s official list of designated pressured housing market municipalities. Mollet’s council has already lodged its objections to the proposed change.
