Mollerussa, in the Lleida province, marked Sant Jordi day with a diverse programme of events, including a Read Aloud Marathon and a social awareness campaign, alongside the traditional book and rose stalls throughout the city centre.
The 15th Read Aloud Marathon, organised by the Jaume Vila County Library as part of the Mollerussa Reading Municipality project, centred on the 50th anniversary of the death of acclaimed writer Agatha Christie. Around 150 students from local educational centres and representatives from various entities participated, reading passages from Christie's works on a stage located in Plaça Manuel Bertrand. The city's mayor, Marc Solsona, opened the marathon, according to local reports.
Concurrently, the Equality area of the Pla d'Urgell County Council utilised Sant Jordi day to promote healthy relationships and diverse love. An informative initiative was held in Town Hall Square, aiming to raise public awareness.
Promoting Healthy Relationships
Marc Esteban, a technician from the LGTBI Comprehensive Care Service, and Marc Torrent, a technician from the Women's Information and Care Service (SIAD), explained that the campaign sought to sensitise citizens to the importance of building healthy bonds free from violence. During the day, bookmarks featuring awareness messages were distributed. These materials also included representations of various forms of sexist violence, from the most subtle to the most severe, officials said.
The city centre served as the main hub for the celebrations, hosting approximately twenty stalls selling books and roses. These stalls were run by local businesses and organisations such as Cal-Met and the Acudam association, as well as by students from the city's schools.
These annual Sant Jordi celebrations in Mollerussa underscore the community's commitment to fostering culture, literacy, and social well-being, bringing together residents, students, and local authorities in a shared observance of Catalonia's most beloved cultural day.
