Mollerussa has started a new intercultural storytelling series for children and families as part of its Civics, Coexistence and Cohesion Plan. The activity, called “Contes al carrer: Històries que ens uneixen”, uses oral storytelling in Catalan to bring people together in public spaces.

The first session took place this Thursday from 4pm to 7pm in Plaça Major. Mollerussa mayor Marc Solsona and Social and Community Action councillor Anna Carné said the project is designed to create spaces for meeting and coexistence, with the participation of people and organisations from different cultural backgrounds in the town.

The opening stories included the Wawelski Dragon from Polish mythology, “The Hare and the Hyena” from Senegalese popular tradition, and Lo Parrot, a local bandit from Mollerussa’s history and legend. The council says the series is intended to highlight cultural diversity, encourage local association involvement, and strengthen social cohesion and community belonging.

Several groups are taking part, including the Senegalese Association of Mollerussa and Comarca, the Polish Association, the Unim Cultures Association, the Malian Immigrants Association of Mollerussa, the Casal Popular l’Arreu, the Municipal Senior Centre, and the Adult Education Centre. The council says these associations are central to the project because they share stories linked to their cultures of origin.

The work behind the series involved the Social and Community Action, Citizenship and Childhood Area, the Civics, Coexistence and Cohesion Plan, the Educational Environment Plan, the Jaume Vila Comarcal Library, and the Department of Social Rights and Inclusion. Two training sessions were held at the Pla d’Urgell Comarcal Library, led by narrator Ramona Térmens, with 13 people from different organisations taking part.

The storytelling series will continue in September with sessions on 3 September and 17 September. If it rains, the sessions will move to the patio of Cal Jaques, on Carrer Travessia Jacint Verdaguer. For more local coverage, see our news page.
