Mollerussa Council in Lleida has unanimously approved a €4.2 million contract to renovate and maintain the town’s public lighting system. The 13-year agreement was awarded to Sociedad Española de Construcciones through a framework deal with the Catalan Association of Municipalities (ACM), and it also includes energy improvements for outdoor areas at some municipal facilities.

The council says the project should cut overall energy consumption by 71% and generate annual savings of nearly €375,000. The investment phase is due to run from June 2026 to June 2027, with the company given two months to prepare the required projects before work starts on the streets.

The successful bidder’s proposal came in 30% below the initial budget. For 2026, the projected annual cost is €124,673.86, while the remaining payments will be spread through to May 2039, subject to approval in future municipal budgets.

In other council business, Mollerussa also approved updated public prices for its summer swimming pools. The council said the change is intended to keep the service financially sustainable, citing ongoing rises in supply and staffing costs. The governing team and the Popular Party voted in favour, while ERC and CUP abstained.

The council also backed a measure to delegate approval of projects to the Governing Board, even when they do not yet have budget allocation for execution. All municipal groups supported the move except ERC and the Popular Party, who voted against it. The councillor for Junts per Mollerussa abstained. For more local reporting, see our news page.
