Girona, Míchel has left Girona FC after five seasons in charge, ending a spell that saw him become the club’s longest-serving coach by professional matches. He said goodbye in a video message to supporters and described himself as “one more person from Girona for life”.
During his time at the club, Míchel took Girona from the Segunda División to the Champions League. Local reports described the run as “magical and extraordinary”, and his departure comes as the team returns to the Segunda División, the same division it was in when he arrived.
He leaves with 221 matches coached, a club record. That total is ahead of Pablo Machín’s 189 matches across four and a half seasons between 2014 and 2018, while Raül Agné is third on the list with 103 professional matches since Girona’s return in 2008.
Míchel was the only coach in Girona FC’s history to manage the side for five consecutive seasons. His farewell also underlined how closely he had connected with the city and the wider area over that period.
The club now turns to the search for a new head coach ahead of the next Segunda División campaign, with the aim of rebuilding and pushing for promotion again. For more Girona FC coverage, see our news page.
