Manresa, in central Catalonia, marked its annual River Festival this morning with a family activity focused on the wildlife of the Cardener river. Children took part in a scientific bird ringing workshop and saw local bird species up close.

Among the birds shown was a large wood pigeon, which drew a reaction from one child, Guim, who said he was surprised to see “a bird as big as a wood pigeon”. Ornithologist Marc Illa explained the bird’s plumage after it had been caught near the Cardener.

The festival is designed to bring local residents closer to the natural environment around the river. Organisers said activities such as the ringing workshop help children learn about the bird species that live along the Cardener and support environmental education.

The Cardener is a tributary of the Llobregat and flows through Manresa, where it has ecological value for the city and surrounding area. Local environmental groups and the city council consider protecting the river’s ecosystem a priority.

Manresa City Council says it plans to keep supporting initiatives that highlight the area’s natural heritage. For more local coverage, see news from Catalonia.
