Lleida marked the start of its annual Aplec del Caragol on 23 May 2026 with the traditional Lo Caragolasso, the opening event for the city’s best-known snail festival.

The celebration draws thousands of visitors and local residents each year. Lo Caragolasso acts as the symbolic start, bringing participants together before the main festival programme begins.

The Aplec del Caragol is a long-running Lleida tradition built around cooking and eating snails, with groups gathering to share food and celebrate Catalan culinary heritage. It is also a social event that reflects the city’s community spirit and cultural identity.

Photographs from the opening event, published by Segre, captured the early atmosphere of the weekend. The images were credited to Pau Pascual Prat.

The festival continues through the weekend with parades, music and more snail dishes. For more local coverage, see our news page.
