Lloret de Mar Town Council, in collaboration with La Selva County Council, has launched a new pet identification campaign in Lloret de Mar, set to run throughout May. The initiative, which has been an annual programme since 2016, aims to promote the microchipping and official registration of dogs, cats, and ferrets within the municipality.
The campaign provides a straightforward process for residents to ensure their companion animals are properly identified and registered. Interested individuals can visit one of the three collaborating veterinary centres located in Lloret de Mar: Clínica Ignasi Mir on Avinguda del Rieral, Centre El Vellmarí on Carrer de Cienfuegos, and Centre Canvet on Avinguda de Josep Pla Casadevall.
Vereda López, the Councillor for Animal Welfare and Health, highlighted the significant benefits of these identification and registration procedures. According to López, "in this way, access to animal data can be obtained in cases of loss or escape, which is why the Town Council makes this service available to all residents of the town." This system is crucial for reuniting lost pets with their owners and for maintaining a comprehensive animal census.
Ensuring Responsible Pet Ownership
Beyond general identification, the campaign also addresses specific requirements for certain animals. Owners of breeds classified as potentially dangerous must secure a licence from the Town Council for their ownership and handling. This process involves presenting proof of a valid civil liability insurance policy, including its payment receipt, and an authorised medical centre's certificate confirming the owner's physical capacity and psychological aptitude.
Furthermore, the Town Council reminded residents of their obligation to sterilise cats, a measure mandated by Law 7/2023. This legislation, enacted on 28 March 2023, focuses on the protection of animal rights and welfare, aiming to control populations and prevent abandonment.
The ongoing pet identification campaign in Lloret de Mar reinforces the local authorities' commitment to animal welfare and responsible pet ownership. By facilitating these essential steps, the Town Council seeks to enhance the safety and traceability of pets across the municipality, ensuring that lost animals can be quickly returned to their homes and promoting adherence to Catalonia's animal protection laws.
