Catalonia’s internal water basins were 84.44% full on 31 July, according to the latest figures published by the Agència Catalana de l’Aigua (ACA), the Catalan Water Agency. The reading was 0.03 percentage points below the previous update but remained well above the 60% threshold for drought conditions.
For households and businesses supplied by the Ter-Llobregat network, which chiefly serves the provinces of Barcelona and Girona and the Solsonès comarca, the level marks a substantial improvement after years of drought and water restrictions. The ACA publishes daily reservoir reports for Catalonia and a separate record for the Ter-Llobregat system.
Ter-Llobregat system supplies Barcelona, Girona and Solsonès
The Ter-Llobregat network includes treatment plants, reservoirs and other water infrastructure. Its five reservoirs are:
- Sau, in Vilanova de Sau, Osona
- Susqueda, in Osor, Selva
- La Baells, in Cercs, Berguedà
- La Llosa del Cavall, in Navès, Solsonès
- Sant Ponç, in Clariana de Cardener, Solsonès
Four further reservoirs are outside the Ter-Llobregat system: Darnius Boadella in Darnius, Alt Empordà; Foix in Castellet i la Gornal, Alt Penedès; Siurana in Cornudella de Montsant, Priorat; and Riudecanyes in Baix Camp.
Rainfall lifted reserves after prolonged drought
Spring rainfall in 2025 lifted Catalan reservoir reserves above 80% of capacity, more than 20 percentage points higher than the average over the preceding five years, according to the reported ACA data. At the start of March, rising levels led to controlled water releases at several points.
At Susqueda, the reservoir reached 102% of capacity during the wet period, while the River Ter at La Cellera de Ter entered an alert level. On 5 April 2025, the drought was declared over after internal-basin reservoirs ended March above 60% full.
